Mala Necklace

Buddhist prayer beads or malas (Sanskrit: mālā "garland") are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited, breaths while meditating, counting prostrations, or the repetitions of a buddha's name.

Mala necklaces are strands of 109 beads—typically stones, crystals, sandalwood or rudraksha beads that carry certain energy—traditionally used during japa meditation, where a mantra is quietly repeated 108 times. In this class you will learn the knotting technique used in Mala making.

Introduction to Soldering
Build on your torch skills gained in the Level 1 Metalsmithing class as you learn to solder a layered pendant.

Soldering is a multi-step process that involves solder, flux, and pickle.  It can be intimidating, but this class will walk you through the process step-by-step as we all create the pendant shown in the illustration.  Once you have successfully completed that task, you can make another pendant of your own design as time allows. We will also learn how to use a flexshaft power tool to polish and finish your piece.

When you leave class, you will not only have successfully soldered your first piece of wearable art—but you will also take with you a comprehensive handout, with fully illustrated step-by-step instructions to help you get started in your home studio.

NOTE: We provide all the tools and equipment for use in the class (but take a peek at the Materials tab for a glimpse of the tools you will be using and may want to add to your toolbox back at your studio).
